It is a birth sampler, with the birth date stitched on the small sail boat above the name plate, the parents initials are just below the largest ship and the grandparents and great-grandparents initials scattered among the other ships. It can also be stitched as a genealogy/family sampler by inserting the family name in the name plate, then scattering the family initials among the ships. If extra initials need to be inserted they can be stitched over one thread. The date on the sampler was stitched and can be inserted instead of birth date on the small sail boat.
