We Three Kings by Glendon Place 2009

Designer Cheryl Granda

The well-known Christmas song, "We Three Kings" was written by John H. Hopkins Jr., in 1857 as a carol for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. As the first stanza reads: We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. The carol was a tribute to the three worshipful kings, Melchior, Balthazar and Jasper who all saw the star prophesied as the birth of Christ at exactly the same hour, although each of them was far from the other (India, China and Persia) and none knew of the others' purpose. Each king prepared great and rich gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) and set out on a journey the find the Christ child, using the star to guide them to Bethlehem. Stitched in the brilliant jewel-tones often worn by kings, and accented with beads and embellishments to depict the rich brocades of their elegant robes, this unique piece will become a cherished addition to your Christmas décor.
